Castle of Csókakő
After the Mongol invasion, the impressive gothic Castle of Csókakő was built on a small cliff on the southern edge of the Vértes Hills to control the "military road to Fehérvár" mentioned in the founding charter of the Tihany Abbey, which is also the earliest written Hungarian-language record.
Of the crumbling defence fortresses in the Vértes, Csókakő is the only one that does not hide in the thick forest, but rather rises above the small village among vineyards at the edge of the mountain range.
By the spring of 2014, much of the castle had been completely rebuilt, including a drawbridge leading to the rebuilt gate tower, with a portcullis, gate wings, and a southwestern section of the castle wall, complete with a parapet and a wooden drawbridge walkway.
The friends of the Catle of Csókakő have continuously maintained and rebuilt the castle. The castle is free to visit and offers beautiful views of the Mór Basin and the Eastern Bakony Mountains.
